On Tuesday, May 5, 2015 Mercy took part in the regionally-sponsored, 24-hour online giving events The Big Payback (Nashville,TN) and Give STL Day (St. Louis, MO). Both events created a unique giving experience for Mercy donors, raising funds and awareness for Mercy’s mission while participating in a larger effort to promote philanthropy in the Nashville and St. Louis areas.

Residents at our Monroe home recently enjoyed a “Night of the Bayou” adventure with members of Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church at the Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Monroe.

The annual outing included a brown bag dinner and an educational tour of the bayou led by a refuge ranger. Mercy residents learned about plants and animals native to the area.The Black Bayou—located in the Ouachita parish of Monroe, Louisiana—features a spectacular 1,600-acre scenic lake and a 4,500-acre refuge that supports a variety of waterfowl, migratory songbirds and other wildlife. Thirteen teams participated in the first annual Bowl for Mercy held in Chesterfield, MO at Brunswick Zone on Thursday, May 14, 2015. Meant to create awareness and generate support for the life-transforming work of Mercy, the event featured an inspiring address by a St. Louis Mercy graduate in addition to two hours of bowling.

Francis, 2014 Mercy graduate, welcomed the 80 Bowl for Mercy attendees and shared her personal story of how she was abused and sex trafficked during her childhood. This left her hopeless with no will to live.When Francis came to Mercy, she thought she would just “do her time” and then move on, but God had other plans. Last week, WIN Home Inspection Sierra paid forward their raffle winnings earned at an annual company conference and presented Mercy a $10,000 check to help provide care and counseling to young women struggling with life-controlling issues.

Last week, the St. Louis Mercy residents had the privilege of visiting the Illinois State Capitol as the guests of Illinois State Senator Kyle McCarter and his wife, Victoria. The McCarters are long-time Mercy supporters, serving on our St. Louis Community Board, volunteering at and hosting events, and offering encouragement to the young women in the Mercy program. Long-time Mercy supporter Ken Mansfield recently released a new book Rock and a Heart Place: A Rock ‘n’ Roller-Coaster Ride from Rebellion to Sweet Salvation and has pledged a tithe from the book’s proceeds to benefit Mercy.

Co-authored by best-selling biographer Marshall Terrill, Rock and a Heart Place is Mansfield’s fifth book and features the never-before-heard secrets, stories, and spiritual testimonies of several of rock music’s greatest legends, including members of Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, Collective Soul, England Dan & John Ford Coley, Grand Funk Railroad, Kansas, Korn, Ozzy Osbourne, Pointer Sisters, Prince, The Ronettes, and The Turtles.
