Nashville Mercy residents were blessed to experience the cultural music and dance of the Watoto Children’s Choir twice this month. The choir performed at Christ Church on March 29th and then visited the Nashville Mercy home this week while they were still in town on tour.
The Watoto Children’s Choir travels worldwide advocating for the millions of vulnerable women and children across Africa. Watoto Child Care Ministries was started by Gary and Marilyn Skinner in response to the overwhelming number of orphaned children and vulnerable women in Uganda whose lives had been ravaged by war and disease. The mission of Watoto is to RESCUE the vulnerable and RAISE each one as a leader so that they in turn will REBUILD their nation. Mercy, in keeping with one of its three guiding principles, gives 10% of all incoming donations to other ministries and regularly supports the faith-based, holistic efforts of Watoto.
When the choir stopped by to tour the Nashville home, they were very excited to give and receive hugs from each Mercy girl. They also performed a song and dance for the girls (see the video below). Several Watoto staff spoke encouraging words over the Mercy residents about their worth and purpose in the Lord. The residents also had the opportunity to ask the Watoto children questions about their lives in Uganda and their time touring the United States. It was an incredible time of fellowship and mutual blessing for all!
Here’s what a couple of residents had to say about the Watoto children and staff:
“When we saw them at Christ Church, I literally cried the whole service because of how amazing and inspiring they are! To go through terrible, unthinkable things and be able to travel around the world and sing about how great God is was so encouraging to me. Also, I loved how kind and loving they were!” –Megan
“There are literally no words to describe how much love I have for Watoto missions and how much love I felt from them. Seeing their smiling faces just blows my mind. Them declaring God’s Word over me is heart changing! I realized God really can handle anything!” –Alden
